the old romantic shack clunes
At the beautiful authentic Clunes village, 6 minutes walk away, you will receive old fashioned country hospitality at the general store, the bottle shop with its unique boutique wines and at the delightful cafe where you can enjoy breakfast with the locals, or wood-fired pizzas on a Thursday night and gyozas on Friday night. Browse through the labyrinth of our second hand bookstore and then if yu are heading to view one of our many beautiful sights in the local area,  enjoy the experience of our local service station where they still serve the petrol for you.

Horse riding is just down the road, hot air balloons float serenely by our property on the weekend (book in Byron Bay).  You may even want to try your skills in circus acrobatic classes in Byron Bay – from beginners through to the more seasoned athlete. Whether you are into the extreme sports or want to take in the beauty of rolling beaches, quaint cafes, stylish boutiques and restaurants of almost every nationality and price bracket – it is here on your doorstep.  We highly recommend the Eltham Valley Pantry (featured on Channel 7 Sydney Weekender) for breakfast and lunch using all fresh produce and their own home grown macadamias, and the amazing Flock in Lismore (also featured on Channel 7) who have been reborn since our floods earlier in 2017 and offer amazing fresh salads and ridiculously creative and delicious cakes. Bangalow village, just 10 minutes away offers a unique shopping experience and a range of coffee shops and restaurants . Whatever your  culinary desires, you will find restaurants to suit all tastes and occasions – a plethora of choice within 20 minutes of your relaxing accommodation.

Of course, if you want to relax and not move from our beautiful setting, you can toast marshmallows in the fire pit, walk around our property and chat to our friendly alpacas and cows, play with our 4 gorgeous ‘oodles’ and take in the beauty of Highland Retreat and the adjoining Richmond Valley. Of course, you can  relax with a book (plenty to choose from our bookcase in the guest lounge), play some music, organise an in-house massage from our local therapist, open a beer or pour a glass of champagne and enjoy the beauty of nature as the sun sets over the ridge,

Whether you enjoy your days exploring the picturesque hinterland and waterfalls, exerted yourself walking up Mount Warning, surfed, wind sailed, hand glided or just sunbathed on the glorious white beaches, or perhaps shopped and ate your way through eclectic Byron Bay, you will delight in coming ‘home’ to Highland Retreat. Soak in the beauty of your private view and relax with a drink on your deck, or perhaps a board game; a challenge with the WII in the guest lounge or just chilling watching one of the many movies available through streaming or bring your favourite DVD’s.
